Angela00:30
Join us as we take the mystery out of this new digital universe. Welcome to Women of the Metaverse. So far we have brought you the Board eight Yacht Club, World of Women, Be Friends and The Fly Fish Club. In this episode, we are talking about one of the OGs of NFT Collections, crypto punk.
Lava Labs founded by two Canadian creative Technologies. Matt Hall and John Watkinson released 10,000 crypto banks in 2017.
Cheryl01:06
So the whole thing started as a bit of an experiment. Matt and John created a program that could generate thousands of funny looking images. They thought that they could turn it into an app or a piece of software, but what they ended up doing was changing the landscape of NFTs, the pixel art images, and we have talked about this a lot, how NFTs have this pixelated.
Which they kind of set the standard for. Were inspired by the London punk scene, the cyber punk movement, and the artists Df punk. There are five categories in the collection. Female, male, zombie, ape, and alien. Alongside that, there are seven features. Buck, tooth, big beard, mole, cigarette, plastic shades, earring.
Top hat using regeneration technology. The 10,000 crypto punk NFTs were created using categories and features only. Crypto punk 8, 3 4 8 has all seven features and is, and he’s highly sort.
Angela02:23
Can you imagine just creating this and then like you. Changed the world in terms of nfps and you were just messing about with the program.
See what you could do there? Yeah. Yeah.
Cheryl02:35
And these guys were the first, Yeah. When they were released, the first 1000 known as dev punks were held back by the creators, and the rest could be claimed free by anyone with an inferior fer
Angela02:49
wallet. This makes me cry. This is just like, you could just get them free.
Just get it for.
Cheryl02:56
I’d like newer collections. It wasn’t initially an overnight success into an article. Im Mashable saw the 9,000 snapped up in 24 hours. Now crypto punks are some of the largest selling NFTs today. In February, get this 2022. 5 8, 22 was sold for 23.7 million. Ugh. I
Angela03:23
just like. If that’s, If you got one of those for free, if that was the first time it was sold and you sold it for 23.70 my kudos.
They were millionaires,
Cheryl03:32
aren’t they? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. If you could, if you could look up the top 10 lists of the most valuable NFTs crypto punks appear several times.
Angela03:42
I think when I looked yesterday, four of the top 10. Our crypto. Our crypto, yeah.
Cheryl03:48
The backgrounds have also a significance as well. Punks with blue backgrounds are not for sale.
Those with red backgrounds are available for sale by their owner, and those with a purple background have an active bid on them. We have to be honest, we are not sure how the backgrounds change, but for collectors it is an easy spot if you’re looking for crypto punk investments,
Angela04:13
I did try and look how that, like how that worked.
You know, got
Cheryl04:16
a 20 million to like fur.
Angela04:19
Yeah, you, you wanna know which ones you can and can’t buy, don’t you? ? Totally.
Cheryl04:23
I think, I think it’s out the question for them, the majority
Angela04:26
of it, as with most of these sought after NFT collections, there are a raft of celebrities that own them. Gary Va Chan, at the date of recording this episode, owns 62 crypto bun.
That man,
Cheryl04:42
I wonder if he got his for free.
Angela04:43
I don’t think he did. I think he was a bit late to the party on, and then he purchased some, then he purchased Some other celebrities include Jay-Z, Serena Williams, Heidi cl, and Mark Cuban Love Labs is also credited as being the inspiration for ERC Dash set and 21 Standard.
Which basically sets out how to build non fungible and unique tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. That this may seem like a boring piece of information, but it really does show that Lava labs with crypto punks really forged a path that had not been traveled before to enable collections to be released and be so successful, such as the ones that we have previously talked.
Unlike the newer collections that are now released, this really was about NFTs as being digital art. There is no roadmap on the website. There does not seem to be any other benefit to only one than just to say, I have a crypto bank. There’s no membership club or any other utility that seems to come with the current crop of big NFT collections that have been.
Cheryl05:54
Mm. So in March, 2022, all Crypto Punks IP was acquired by Ulab. Now you know Ulab from, they’re the creators of the Board eight Yacht Club. And in May, the whole crypto punk marketplace was moved to U Labs. As soon as the acquisition was announced, it was also announced that anyone owning a crypto punk now had full commercial, right.
Now, we discussed this before because Ulab have formed partnerships with the other creators such as, uh, World of Women, and as part of their business model, it appears that they want their owners to be given the commercial rights. So
Angela06:35
not only do you have an NFT that’s worth upwards of a hundred thousand to millions now, you can really make money off the back of it.
Cheryl06:45
Absolutely. We’ve still got gotta do that to speak with our ones. Yeah. But that’s another episode. , there are not a ton of stories like they are with World of Women and Board Eight Yacht Club and V Friends because as we said, they didn’t come with any utilities, and it is only this year that the owners have received commercial rights.
So you will see Hunk brands in the future coming out, however, in May, 2021. Matt and John, the creators put up their law of nine of their own crypto punks for auction at Christie’s, and they were sold for just under 17 million.
Angela07:25
We throw, when we are in these episodes, we just throw these millions and billions around like, you know, just the amount of money,
Cheryl07:33
isn’t it?
Earlier this year, crypto punk 5 360 4 was transferred to the Ukrainian Ethereum wallet to help fund their defense of Russia’s invasion, and that was sold for a hundred k.
Angela07:47
I love this. I think this is amazing that you could just go here, have my piece about, it’s yours now. Do what you want with it. It’s gonna help them hopefully.
Yeah.
Cheryl07:58
Yeah, so in August of 2022, Tiffany announced the release of the NF T in collaboration, of course, with crypto punk. Limited to 250, you are able to be the owner of a bespoke piece of jewelry made from your crypto punk for the grand price of $47,250. Now, I saw these and they weren’t the most desirable pieces of jewelry were
Angela08:28
No, well, they crypto punks.
Great art. Are they, They, you know, we moaned about this before in other episodes where we say this, like, this pixelated art that everybody’s now doing it, it doesn’t look great, but it’s smart what they’ve done. Definitely. But yeah, and, and
Cheryl08:46
it’s good that, um, Tiffany dipped their toe in and they collaborated with a very, well, you know, the best.
Um, N ft collect’s
Angela08:56
a smart move. It’s no brainer. Yeah, it’s a smart move. So this is quite a short episode. There is not a ton of smart business ideas that can come off the back to crypto punk, but what there is to take away is that they didn’t follow the crowd. They were inspired to create something new.
There are a lot of copycats on the market, like we’ve just mentioned, but they were the originals. They are one of the leaders in this field, and whilst others may come along and may even appear to be more successful, and also the success of crypto points may go up and down because of their originality of the idea, they will remain valuable for a really long time.
So we hope you enjoyed this episode. Join us next week as we continue our journey into this new digital world. Bye for now. See you then.
